Testing solutions across the Mediterranean
ReMedi brings together four wetland regions across the Mediterranean that represent different environmental, climatic, and agricultural realities. By testing solutions in diverse contexts, the project can evaluate their effectiveness under different conditions and develop approaches that can be transferred to other rice-growing regions.
Ebre Delta, Spain
Located on the northeast Mediterranean coast, the Ebre Delta is one of Europe’s most important wetland ecosystems and a key biodiversity hotspot.
The area hosts extensive rice cultivation alongside lagoons, coastal habitats, and protected natural areas, making it an ideal setting to explore the relationship between agriculture and wetland conservation.
Lower Egypt, Egypt
Rice cultivation plays a major role in the Nile Delta, one of the Mediterranean’s most productive agricultural regions.
The area faces increasing pressure from water scarcity and climate change, providing an important case study for improving resilience in highly productive rice-growing systems.
Ticino River Basin, Italy
The Ticino River Basin lies within Europe’s largest rice-producing country and contains a mosaic of rice fields, forests, rivers, and wetlands.
Its high ecological value and strong agricultural tradition make it an ideal landscape for exploring how biodiversity conservation can coexist with productive farming.
Gediz Delta, Turkey
As one of the most important wetlands in the eastern Mediterranean, the Gediz Delta supports a rich variety of habitats, including lagoons, salt marshes, agricultural land, and freshwater wetlands.
