A healthier future for the Mediterranean wetlands depends on balancing food production, biodiversity conservation, and climate resilience. ReMedi develops  tests and practical solutions that help achieve this balance with supporting local communities and ecosystems.

Protect biodiversity

Promote farming practices that create healthier habitats for birds, pollinators, and other wildlife found in Mediterranean wetland landscapes.

Improve water management

Support more efficient and sustainable use of water while maintaining the ecological value of wetlands.

Address climate change

Reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase carbon storage, and strengthen the resilience of rice-growing systems.

Support sustainable farming

Test organic, biodynamic, and regenerative farming practices that help farmers produce food while reducing environmental impacts.

Use Living Labs to bring farmers, researchers, NGOs, public authorities, and local communities together to co-design practical solutions.

Develop recommendations and management models that can be replicated across Mediterranean countries and support future environmental policies.

How ReMedi Works

The project combines science, farming experience, and local knowledge.

Researchers and farmers work together to test innovative agricultural practices, monitor biodiversity and environmental impacts, and identify solutions adapted to different local conditions.

The results will contribute to a new Mediterranean framework for managing rice-growing wetlands in a way that benefits people, nature, and the climate.

Combining science, farming and nature

ReMedi follows an integrated Water-Food-Ecosystems Nexus approach, recognising that food production, water resources, and ecosystem health are closely interconnected.

The project combines four complementary components:

Agroecological innovation

Implementation of organic, biodynamic, and regenerative farming practices adapted to local wetland conditions. Solutions include sustainable water management, habitat restoration, crop diversification, soil fertility improvement, and nature-based pest management.

Living Labs and stakeholder engagement.

Farmers, researchers, NGOs, public authorities, and local communities work together to co-design, test, and improve solutions through Living Labs, workshops, and training activities.

Monitoring biodiversity, water and carbon

The project measures environmental performance through indicators related to biodiversity, water regulation, greenhouse gas emissions, and carbon storage. Birds and butterflies are used as key bioindicators to assess ecosystem health.

Knowledge exchange and policy development.

Results from all pilot regions are compared and integrated into a shared Mediterranean management model and translated into practical recommendations for decision-makers and land managers.
