Reconnecting rice farming and wetlands across the Mediterranean
Rice fields are much more than agricultural land.
They are also valuable wetland ecosystems that can provide habitat for wildlife, improve water management, store carbon, and help communities adapt to climate change.
ReMedi is a European project that aims to show how rice farming and nature conservation can work together. By treating rice paddies and surrounding wetlands as one connected system, the project develops practical solutions that support biodiversity, improve water resilience, and promote more sustainable food production.
Over three years, ReMedi will bring together farmers, researchers, conservation organisations, and policymakers to test and validate innovative approaches in different Mediterranean regions.
Why is ReMedi needed?
Mediterranean wetlands are under growing pressure from climate change, water scarcity, and biodiversity loss.
At the same time, rice farmers face increasing challenges linked to drought, changing weather patterns, and the need to produce food more sustainably.
Although rice fields and wetlands are closely connected, they are often managed separately. ReMedi aims to bridge this gap by developing solutions that benefit both agriculture and nature.
