The NGO Rete Semi Rurali and its 40 member organisations support, facilitate and promote dialogue, exchange and the sharing of information and initiatives among those who uphold the values of cultivated agrobiodiversity and oppose the practices that lead to its erosion and loss, such as extractive agriculture based on intensive monocultures.

The Network promotes the collective management of agrobiodiversity as a strategic approach to achieving the ecological transition of our economic and production model. It embraces the principles of agroecology to foster a genuine ecological transition and the diversification of our agricultural systems, from seed to plate.

Rete Semi Rurali role in the consortium

Rete Semi Rurali brings many years of experience to the consortium in promoting decentralised seed systems and practices related to enhancing agricultural biodiversity and agroecological innovation. In the Ticino river basin trial, RSR — alongside Polyculturae and UNITO — ensures the active involvement of farmers by overseeing the experimental design and field monitoring of nature-based solutions. The association also promotes the use of Heterogeneous Organic Material (OHM), which is characterised by extreme intraspecific diversity. This trait makes OHM particularly adaptable to different soil and climate conditions. OHM is obtained through a participatory selection process involving many different accessions. This approach encourages the integration of traditional knowledge into scientific activities and enables farmers to co-create solutions.
